Guide to Lace and Linens
Published in Paperback by Antique Trader (March, 1999)
Author: Elizabeth M. Kurella
Average review score:

Excellent Photos and Information
As a valuable addition to any lace collector or lace historian's library, this book fits right inbetween Earnshaw's Lace Identification and Elizabeth's smaller simpler volume "A Pocket Guide to Lace and Linens."

The macro photographs of each lace are clear and sharp making it possible to count the number of twists in a particular stitch and identify exactly which features are the identifiable characteristic of each lace. Elizabeth's valuation system for the monetary value and collectability of each type of lace is informative and well reasoned.

For the would be collector, this book along with Earnshaw's are the ones to have at home while the pocket guide is the one to take with you to the flea markets and antique fairs. Not only will you be able to knowledgably indentify what you have, but you will be able to discern how difficult the stitches and techniques are, when and where the lace was probably made and its relative value on today's market.

The very best Lace identification book I've found!
This book has one or more pages describing each type of lace. The varieties are extensive. It is so clear and easy to understand what makes each lace unique. The first book I reccomend for those wanting to know about lace!!

The Happy Person

A terrific toolkit for dealing with life's challenges
This book was sent to me by a friend who had found it helpful and thought I could use its lessons during a down period in my life. My friend's life story is so full of disasters, unlikely events, awful coincidences, and physical and emotional upheavals that it would make any writer of soap operas blush to use it as a plot thread. Still, she has this quote from Abraham Lincoln on her email "stationery": "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

This book can help you be that strong.

EXCELLENT! one of the most life changing books I've read!
Everyone should read this book! It showed me that everything I do in my life is a choice, a decision! This is a very important "ah ha" experience which will help you to know that, in the words of Victor Frankle, "The last of the human fredoms is to choose ones attitude in any given set of cercomstances"

Hard Pressed
Published in Hardcover by Hudson Hills Pr (01 November, 2000)
Authors: David Platzker and Elizabeth Wyckoff
Average review score:

A highly recommended acquisition for art library collections
An outstanding presentation and recommended pick for discriminating art library collections. David Platzker's Hard Pressed gathers 600 years of prints and technical information, from woodcuts and etchings to digital modern processes. This is much more than a collection of print images however; text provides a running history which includes profiles of key artists, discussions of technical advancements, and insights on print reproduction changes. Black and white and color photos abound.

You'll Be Hard Pressed to Find A Better Book on Prints
This book brilliantly tells the story of the history of the "fine art print" from a fresh prospective. It begins around 1400, when papermaking was introduced to Europe from the East, and the development of woodblock printmaking enabled the creation of the first woodcut prints. What follows is 600 years of technological and artistic innovation: by the 1450s, the printing press had been invented, allowing bibles and broadsheets, as well as simple, devotional pictures to be produced quickly and cheaply. Words and images, with their information and ideas, became available not just to an elite few, but to ordinary people.

The books two essays by Wyckoff and Platzker detail the development of printmaking though artistic experimentation to create a distinctive art form, how new processes allowed images with specific visual characteristics-from early, rough woodcuts, to more refined linear methods such as etching and engraving; from the delicate tonal approaches of mezzotint and aquatint to recent computerized techniques. It delves in particular into how some artists embraced new methods matching innovative techniques with visual invention; while others subverted them.

Artists such as Rembrandt in the 17th century and Edward Ruscha in the 20th century are shown to have conceived of the print as a virtually unique object. The approach is informed by the 20th century notion of the "original print" produced in small, limited editions, continuing the tradition of printmaking as a fine art.

In this book, which accompanies a traveling exhibition, details how printmaking has throughout its history been both a medium for communicating ideas of all kinds and an arena for artistic invention. Imagine for a moment the world without books or newspapers, without posters or postcards. Then follow the history of experimentation and artistic vision that is presented here to discover printmaking as an art form of unexpected possibilities.

The Harmless People
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (October, 1989)
Author: Elizabeth Marshall Thomas
Average review score:

An early ethnographic account with wonderful information
A seminal work of Thomas' experience living with the Kalahari !Kung hunter-gatherers in the 1950s. This is an intimate, personal account of her experience plus a colorful look at quite possibly how all of our ancestors once lived, including how this culture has, since the '50s, basically been destroyed by civilization. A valuable lesson in 303 pages.

A wonderful reading experience
This is a simple account, yet honest and very entertaining. It describes a people almost totally uninfluenced by the advancements and vices of the outside world. The stories held my attention without fail. While classified as anthropology, it is not written in a scientific manner and is approachable for anyone looking to experience a wholly foreign culture.
The last chapter, which describes the people after thirty years, is discouraging, but gives some insight into our own ways of life. This is probably the best non-fiction "story" I have ever read.

Hayley's Heart

Love her writing!
I love the way Elizabeth writes! She really explores those first pangs of romantic love. The questions, the feelings, the obstacles. The story lines are wonderful in all of her books. Some mystery, and challenges to unlock. The settings, and characters are wonderfully described, and the stories are very engaging. It's hard to put it down until you are finished! I can't wait for her next book! I've read all of them, and highly recommend each one.

Hayley's Heart will win you over as a Liz Graham fan!
Hats off to Liz for penning this compelling tale about Hayley, a young woman forced into drudgery as a Colonial bondservant. Hayley proves her courage and loyalty when she helps her sister, Daryl, escape from a cruel master and a certain death sentence for killing him in self-defense. The hero, Conn, takes in both young women without knowing about their past. In the end, it is the love in Hayley's Heart that brings about closure to Conn's own troubled past and Daryl's life-threatening dilemma.

Healing Hearts: Helping Children and Adults Recover from Divorce

Non-Custodial Dads Step up!
As a divorced father this book helped me immensely in not falling into the trap my ex has.

I never let what is going on with her and I conflict with parenting my children. As far as my kids are concerned mommy and daddy don't love each other anymore that's why they are divorced. THey also know that it's not their fault we divorcedand that WE both love them and that will never change.

This book is a must have for any father to truly understand what his rights are, how to handle the divorce with what a friend of mine says, "pizzazz." If you follow the guidelines here, you will be a better parent, a better spouse in the future and not gain a negative view that most "father's rights" group have. This was a joy to read and to implement in my life and that of my divorce.

Very valuable for divorcing parents!!
Healing Hearts is one of the books we use in our training of parents going through divorce. It is very well done. Borrowing a quote used in the book from Satchel Paige, "None of us is smarter than all of us". Of particular value is the focus on children and their needs and the emphasis on responsibilities and not rights.

Healthy Foods, Healthy Kids: A Complete Guide to Nutrition for Children from Birth to Six-Year-Olds

Author: Elizabeth M. Ward

Super Resource for Parents of Young Children
As the mother of three young children - one picky eater, one who can't get enough and one junk-food junky - I was thrilled to find a book written by a nutrition professional that can relate to the challenges of feeding kids. In this easy to read book, nutritionist Elizabeth Ward provides common sense advice on how to feed kids healthy foods based on both sound nutrition science and her experiece feeding her own children. Starting with "preparing for pregnancy," Ward covers topics that all parents want to know about -- breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, helping your child establish eating habits that will ward off chronic disease later in life, "super foods" for kids, food safety and more. I think what I like most is that all the information is presented in a really common sense, guilt-free way, and includes a lot of first hand experiences from mom's also trying to raise healthy kids in a "junk food" world. And the recipes are great -- easy to make and kid-friendly. In my opinion, any book that can help me feed my kids healthfully without adding to the stress of child rearing is easily worth five stars !

Practical and smart
Many children's nutrition books offer unrealistic advice. This book, written by a dietitian and parent, is very practical and realistic, and helps parents figure out how to feed their children healthy food without making the dinner table a battle ground. I found the suggestions very helpful, and I plan to make this book my standard baby shower gift for new mothers.
